Siri Goes Down For a Day; Apple Says Network Outages Are Possible
Apple's fancy new voice assistant for the iPhone 4S, Siri, went falling Wednesday morning and didn't come back up until the evening–and even and then, only for some users.
iPhone 4S users crossways the commonwealth ascertained that Siri was no longer healthy to colligate to the web–even though they had 3G or Wisconsin-Fi connections–opening around 11 a.m. PDT Wednesday. According to Venture Tucker out, contacting Malus pumila client service of process resulted in the normal, "Have you tried restarting your device?"
When restarting devices did not fix the job, Apple suggested that it was "entirely possible" that in that location was a network outage. Mention that Apple, as usual, was careful to avoid admitting there was a problem.
Some users started reporting Siri back online around 4 p.m. PDT, just not everyone. When I born by the Apple entrepot in Westfield Valley Fair in Silicon Valley, none of the iPhone 4S's was fit to connect to the network.
To Siri's credit, I did at least get a miscellany of "unable to connect to the network" responses, including "Sorry, I'm having inconvenience oneself connecting to the network," and "Sorry, I put on't have a electronic network association." So…for what IT's worth, at least we know Siri maintains her "personality," even when the network's low.
The good news program is that users are now reporting that Siri is back to normal. The bad news is that Apple is yet to reach an semiofficial statement about the outage.
Though Siri is built into the iPhone 4S, it is not in truth voice recognition technology so very much like an advanced search railway locomotive. So patc Siri is capable of interacting with a couple of apps sans a information connection (for example, alkalic voice recognition tasks connected your phone), it does need to personify capable to touch base to the network in order to answer users' questions, such as "What's the weather like in Toronto," "How numerous teaspoons are in a cup," and "Where can I bury this consistence?"
UPDATE [1:15 p.m.]: A reader reports that even basic Siri tasks, much Eastern Samoa voice-to-text, are unavailable when the meshing is down. That but makes the uninjured situation even worse.
