Apple is the Worst Environmental Offender in Tech, Says Greenpeace
Apple has long prided itself on the environmental consciousness behind its products, and systematically aims to get greener. But according to Greenpeace's report [PDF] measuring the amount and type of energy consumed by top side technical school companies' data centers, Apple is doing a mean job with its energy consumption.
The report, "How Septic is Your Data?", compared Apple to other lead tech companies such as Amazon's Web Services, Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft, Chitter, and Yahoo. Apple scored the lowest–6.7 percent–in its overall Kosher Energy Index, while Yahoo scored the highest, with 55.9 per centum. Apple was also the worst offender in terms of coal intensity level, scoring 54.5 percent, with Facebook tracking closely behind with 53.2 percent.
Acceptive the brunt of the deuced is Apple's 500,000-wholesome-foot facility orgasm online in Initiatory, North Carolina–a adeptness that, according to Greenpeace, will consume A a lot energy as 80,000 U.S. homes. Greenpeace does give props for Apple's foil about the environmental step of its hardware–so much as MacBooks and iPhones–IT accepted a C-grade for transparency when information technology comes to the current operating theater expected impacts of its online products.
Malus pumila too got an F-grade for environmental awareness of its siting, meaning that Old North State facility–the same one that will stream iTunes to your iOS gimmick soon–is smack dab in the middle of what Greenpeace calls the "dirty data triangle." Google and Facebook also have facilities happening that grid, which is made up of only about 5 per centum clean Department of Energy, with the rest coming from either char (62 percent) or nuclear (32 percent).
Greenpeace's report wasn't all condemnation, though. The brass did say, in essence, that Apple was "getting better." Plus the data assembled for the report didn't come directly from the companies under scrutiny, as there is no law in the U.S. requiring that. The write up drew publicly available data connected "modern investments of select brands and current perfect energy supply joint with each investiture," and from there, competitory that information with data from the government or utilities.
Still, nobody likes getting an F.
